Making Time for Change is Creating Time for Change

At TIP, we believe real transformation starts with time: freeing it, focusing it, and using it with purpose. Creating Time for Change is where that shift begins. For functional leaders, it means challenging how the function creates value — not just by adding AI, but by redesigning how the work actually works.

In this phase, you and your team explore how Generative AI can streamline the everyday, reduce friction in workflows, and create space for strategic, customer-facing impact. You will reframe blockers like legacy metrics and rhythms. You will reimagine the operating model itself — and build a roadmap your team can own, test, and evolve.

This isn’t about tools. It’s about mindset, methods, and measurable results.

Warm up for your STEP 1 FUNCTION session

Having already worked together as a team to build your AI fluency, you’re now ready to take the next step, applying those skills to how your entire function operates. As AI becomes part of everyday work, this session is about redesigning your function for scale, speed, and customer relevance. You’ll use the same principles, outcome focus, customer empathy, and rapid validation, to create a roadmap your team can own, test, and evolve.

Why this matters now

AI lets us move at unprecedented speed, but without direction just helps us do the wrong thing, faster. In this session we’re going to reimagine, reframe, and redesign how your function creates value, then launch experiments that prove what works in the real world. This warm up gets us aligned on how we deliver change in the age of AI:

  • Start with the customer, not the idea. Before we invest, validate that anyone needs it, and why.

  • Design in the customer’s shoes. Functional services should fit the people who consume them, colleagues, partners, and customers.

  • Prove value early. Use thin-slice MVPs to learn quickly, not slide ware to convince slowly.

  • Lead with outcomes. Define what good looks like, then let evidence, not opinion, prioritise the work.

  • Measure change, not just activity.  (OKRs) We’ll track learning velocity, cycle time, experiments completed, and validated outcomes alongside your existing KPIs.

Start Here: Four Short Videos That Shift How You Work

To get the most from FUNCTION, please watch these short videos before the session. They’ll introduce the methods we’ll use, and set the scene for what’s possible.

Design Thinking

Why: Learn a human-centred approach to solving complex problems.
What: Explains the iterative process of empathising, ideating, and prototyping to create solutions that truly meet user needs.

Personas

Why: Understand your customers deeply to design better experiences.
What: Shows how to create personas that capture goals, behaviours, and pain points for informed decision-making.

OKRs (Objectives & Key Results)

Why: Align teams on what matters most and measure progress effectively.
What: Introduces the OKR framework for setting ambitious objectives and tracking measurable results.

Lean Start Up

Why: Reduce risk and accelerate innovation through rapid experimentation.
What: Explains how to test assumptions early using MVPs and validated learning before scaling solutions.

Bonus: Homer Simpson’s Car Design (what not to do!)

Why: A humorous reminder of why customer insight matters.
What: Demonstrates the pitfalls of designing without understanding user needs—leading to costly mistakes.

What to Bring

  • An open mind and a willingness to challenge the status quo

  • Your laptop (for hands-on exercises) and mobile phone

  • Curiosity

Outcomes

By the end of FUNCTION, you and your colleagues will have:

  • A co-created Team Charter: Your shared principles and ways of working

  • A set of OKRs (Objectives & Key Results) for the next 90 days

  • A high-level FUNCTION Roadmap with a prioritised backlog of experiments and actions

  • Clarity on your first sprints and how you’ll track progress

After the Session

You’ll have one week to reflect, review the materials, and discuss with your colleagues then regroup to commit, together, to the transformation journey.

The Commitment

In the era of AI, now you’ll make the quarter and change the function

Time Capital Podcast

This episode explores how leaders can turn reclaimed time from GenAI into strategic transformation — not just automating tasks, but reimagining what the function delivers. Learn how to shift from activity to outcomes, and build a function that leads, not lags
